Remember, as a child in elementary school, the teacher would pass out wide-ruled paper for writing? It was perfect as we were learning to write — giving us room to write big and messy and make lots of mistakes.

As we got older, we were introduced to college-ruled paper, with more lines and less space. However, wide-ruled notebooks are still widely used by students in the classroom and outside it as well.

The Benefits of Wide-Ruled Composition Books
Wide-ruled composition notebooks are essential tools in developing early writing skills for a variety of reasons:

  • Develops fine motor skills. More surface area to write means extra room to practice handwriting and cursive.
  • Allows children to refine their writing structure. By trial and error in a larger writing space, the young learner will be able to fine-tune their handwriting before moving on to a smaller format.
  • Learning proper handwriting techniques pays off. Studies hint at a strong correlation between productivity and success in the classroom.

Advantages to Handwriting
With texting and keyboarding the new norm for kids, there are many pluses to the art of writing by hand:

  • Visual perception. Handwriting activates visual comprehension of letters, which aids in learning to read
  • Improved memory. Writing by hand means having to concentrate more than if you're pounding on a keyboard, which leads to better retention.
  • Flow of creativity. There's no doubt that free-flowing writing feels more natural and artistic versus tapping on a phone or laptop.
  • Unique and personal. A text or email cannot convey the mood and personality of the writer the way their individual writing style can.
As we continue to see the value in learning proper handwriting skills, children will need essentials like composition notebooks, marble notebooks, and notepads.
