Overall this is a good laptop chill pad. The fans are relatively quiet and the ease of use to change the slope of the mat is easy. The main downside is that in order to use external devices like disk drives in the USB ports it REQUIRES an external power supply. The power supply is not sold through Staples which makes actually using the mat for its intended purpose more difficult. Apparently yoou can only purchase the power supply directly from TARGUS. There are not many details in the very simple instruction booklet, and they do not specifically specify what the power supply rating should be in the instructions. It is printed on the bottom of the mat itself.

This product is very quiet. The only problem/issue I have is that it feels flimsy. What I mean is, I feel that it may break. It don't feel like it's going to last. This is for a mobile device (Laptop) which we move, pick up an put down, a numerous amount of times a day. When you pick up the laptop, you NEED to pick up the cooler along with it and when you kind of squeeze the cooler and laptop together as your grasping it, the bottom goes in..They should have made some sort of plastic piece there for support as there is none. After a while, I can see the plastic cracking.

      My wife need a laptop cooler and since I wasn't using my old Targus laptop cooler I gave it to her. But soon my laptop started to get warm so I purchased a new Targus with the 4 port USB hub. Works great! Keeps the laptop cooler and use the hub for my mouse and keyboard since my laptop only has 3 USB ports. 3 ports are good except that some devices are too large and make some ports unuseable. So the extra ports are needed. Did not need the optional USB power supply.

        I've had computer stands before, and knew I didn't like the bean bag type because they're too hot on your lap. I've had the stands with the legs and they were extremely uncomfortable. I've given up on having my computer on my lap but still need air circulation to dissipate the normal heat. This particular unit has numerous fans and the best feature is multiple USB ports to charge my phone and iPad at the same time which is great because most computers come with just one USB port suitable for charging other devices.

        So, I'm that guy. I can't afford the "bleeding edge" hardware that comes out tomorrow; but I do demand a lot from my machines.
        My current "laptop" - actually a portable computer - is an Alienware M17x (2nd gen).

        Gamers know it, ( no anti-Dell jokes, please) - for the rest, I'll say it's big ( 17.4" hi-def screen), its fast, powerful, and heavy 13lbs estimate).

        I use it for gaming, programming, and security profiling.

        The last time I dismantled it, it was running hotter than normal. I cleaned and replaced all the heat-related items, even the CPU heatsink and fresh paste, new fans, and copper cleaner for the heat spreaders. Still not good enough. This item caught my eye in-store, and the extra 4-port USB hub really sold me.

        Extra fans ( quiet.. looking for a way to boost them!) , an adjustable angle, more USB ports (I use all 4 on the machine).. all self-powered through one USB port.

        Well, my big ol' super machine is a little too heavy - making any but the lowest angle unstable. It also tends to slide off the surface (purely gravity.. it does it when I leave it alone).

        BUT- my heat issues are no longer a problem, and I get extra USB ports.

        Definitely worth it. Wish it was sturdier.
