Thermometers provide the actual reading of the temperature for personal and industrial use. They are small, handheld tools that can fit in a backpack. Check your temperature or that of a colleague at home or in the office using these portable instruments. Browse through the diagnostic and exam instruments available at Staples and choose those that fit your needs.

Thermometers have various uses and benefits
They’re ideal for measuring the temperature of several items to get useful information concerning individuals and surroundings. Measuring the temperature outside helps users determine the outfit to wear. Measuring body temperature helps individuals know whether they or a family member has a fever or not. Thermometers are also useful in science and production as they measure the temperature of gases, liquids, metals, and other materials. They also determine the temperature of food while cooking.

Different types of thermometers
These diagnostic and exam instruments differ in terms of how they work. Infrared thermometers use thermal radiation emitted by objects to measure the temperature. They can read the temperature from a distance. Most of them appear like miniature guns and are handheld. Infrared temperature measuring instruments are ideal for industrial tasks. They have an LCD display and use batteries, and they include an electronic trigger for a continuous temperature reading.

Oral thermometers are ideal for checking for cases of flu or colds. They are latex-free and reusable, making them environmental-friendly. They’re small and can fit in drawers at home or in the office. Digital thermometers have a digital screen that shows the readings within seconds. They have a thermistor that reacts to temperature changes and shows the results on the screen.

Temperature strips are useful in hospitals to quickly determine the temperature of a patient. The strips have liquid crystals that change color when in contact with heat. Every color reflects a certain body temperature. Forehead thermometer strips provide a way of determining the temperature in hurried situations. Apply one strip on the forehead and it provides a reading of the current body temperature.

What factors do you need to look at when choosing these diagnostic and exam tools?
Consider the level of accuracy and temperature range. The environment in which the device operates determines the choice. Consider whether it measures remotely or at the spot. The scale preferred and multiple channels required also affect the type of instrument to use. Determine if the instrument requires hygienic approvals. Other factors to consider include ease of use, cost, comfort, and speed.

Is it important to clean thermometers?
Yes, cleaning thermometers reduces the risk of infections to other people. The digital units require wiping with a soft cloth and alcohol and leaving them to air dry. Always clean the clinical devices before and after use.

What are thermometers made from?
Glass thermometers have a bulb at the bottom filled with a colored hydrocarbon spirit and a vertical tube that is engraved with temperature graduations. As the temperature changes, the spirit expands or contracts, and this change is seen by the level of the liquid in the tube. Digital thermometers have a temperature-sensitive electrical element called a thermocouple whose electrical resistance changes with temperature. The changes in resistance are measured and displayed on a small LCD display. Non-contact thermometers use infra-red technology to measure body temperature.
