Many professionals and students use ruled notepads to take notes and prepare drafts of written material. The lines provide boundaries for keeping handwritten material more organized. Wide-ruled notepads offer additional space between the lines than other notebook pads, allowing for more room for hands to wield writing implements and extra room for eyes to read the handwriting. Many different brands make high-quality, wide-ruled pads and other office supplies that are perfect for staying organized.
Wide-Ruled and College-Ruled Notepads Are Invaluable to Handwriters
College-ruled paper, also called the legal-ruled paper, is one of three basic types of horizontally lined paper for writing, with wider spacing between lines than with the narrow-ruled and college-ruled varieties. Each wide-ruled line is spaced 11/32 of an inch from the next, which is 1/8 inch more than college-ruled paper. The additional space makes handwriting easier for those who write boldly, for grade-school children just perfecting their writing skills, or for notetakers needing to write fast to keep up with lectures. Wide-ruled notepad paper normally has a vertical margin line positioned about 1.25 inches from the left-hand edge of the page, which helps and writers maintain sentence and paragraph consistency.
Wide-Ruled Notepads in Different Sizes and Colors
Professionals and students use notepads with wide rules for different purposes, sometimes requiring pads of different dimensions. Those with wide rules come in 4 x 6-inch notepaper size, 8 x 11-inch letter size, and 8.5 x 14-inch legal size, appropriate for notetaking with or without a desk, or sitting or standing. Different sizes of specialty notepads with wide rules are available as well.
Most of the wide-ruled notepad paper comes in either canary yellow or white, with blue horizontal rule lines and a red vertical margin line. Other colors are available too, including ivory, cream, and faint blue or green, lightly tinted to provide contrast for pencil lead or pen ink. Some notepads come with 100 percent recycled paper containing 50-percent postconsumer content.
How Easily Can You Detach Paper from Wide-Ruled Notepads?
Many hand writers and notetakers want to be able to detach sheets selectively from the pads, either to discard them as extraneous information or to organize material by subject or content. The paper is held together, normally at the tops, but sometimes on the sides, with different binding options that let users easily pull off sheets one at a time.
Tape-bound attachments consist of paper-backed adhesive tape wrapped around the tops or spines to hold sheets in place. The paper in many of these tape-bound notepads perforates toward the binding to tear off more easily. Pads with gum or glue binding consist of sheets pressed together and held in place with an adhesive applied to the very edges of the paper, making it simple to tear off one or more sheets at a time.
