The black specks you see are particles of activated carbon and aren't harmful. Resoaking the filter, completely submerged in a tall glass of cold water, for 15 minutes, then holding it for 1-2 minutes under cold running tap water is often enough to minimize this. The particles also may be minimized by ensuring that water doesn't run into the reservoir with full force, and that the incoming water is generally directed away from the filter. If it’s not aligned correctly, the indicator may not activate. -Check the battery tab. Some units have a small plastic tab that needs to be removed before the indicator works. -Reset the indicator: Press and hold the reset button for about 8 seconds until all the lights blink, then release.
