The best
Don't ever get a plastic compass -- they don't hold their measurement. But this one does. It is held open by a spring, and held closed by the adjustable screw. So as you're drawing your circle, it is held closed and won't slip. It will take any kind of pencil also, so you're not limited on using their lead.

a good compass
This is an actual functioning compass. I can use my own standard pencil instead of having to have special leads or a special size. And it works.
It is not so easy to find such a simple thing.

General Precision Pencil Compass
This is a great tool. It is durable (all metal) and holds a standard diameter pencil, not special leads. The clamp for the pencil is metal and has a thumb-screw adjustment, not a slide clamp that slips. Recommend. Staples delivery was very fast.
