Hello Alan, Thank you for reaching out to us. To remove the backing from a DYMO D1 tape, follow these steps: 1. Print your label using your DYMO label maker. 2. Once the label is printed, use a pair of scissors or a sharp knife to cut off the excess tape on each end of the label. 3. Then, turn the label over and locate the split in the middle of the backing. 4. Use your fingernail or a pair of tweezers to peel the backing away from the tape at one end of the label. 5. Slowly and carefully peel the backing away from the tape, working your way down the label towards the other end. 6. Once the backing is removed, you can apply the label to your desired surface. Note: It's important to peel the backing away slowly and carefully to avoid tearing the tape or leaving any adhesive residue on the label. If you do encounter any adhesive residue, you can use a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or an adhesive remover to clean it off. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused. If you are still experiencing issues with the display, please remove the batteries and the tape then press the power button 15 times to discharge the printer. Insert brand new high-quality batteries that have never been inside the printer and insert your tape.

You can change the contrast by pressing the following 3 buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds: Backspace + 8 + On/Off. If these steps do not help, kindly contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
