A new SSD PassPort Drive
I've had 3 Passports all with drives in the past and this is my first SSD. It was plug and play except I didn't know how to set it to backup files so had issues at first. WD support helped me thru the problem and now I think all will be fine. As with all my others this backup drive will be put to good use.

Short comings
For a Mac’s Time Machine this SSD HD requires reformatting. Other brands do not!
Also the item has no ventilation vents hence heats up. This shortens it’s life considerably!

Response from Staples :
Hello,
We're sorry to hear your user experience with the WD My Passport Portable Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing this review.
Best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. We have placed a few helpful links below providing more information for your convenience.

"Windows or macOS Cannot Find My Drive":

If the test is unfortunately inconclusive and you just purchased the drive then you should be able to return it to the place of purchase. However, if you are past their return policy, you can create an RMA through WD and replace the drive under warranty if necessary.

All our products must pass our stringent quality standards before leaving our factory to be free from defects in materials and craftsmanship. We stand behind our products throughout the device's factory warranty period. We would appreciate the opportunity to assist you further. You can contact us by phone below and provide your details.

Fair
It was OK but I had to reformat it for my MacBook Pro laptop whereas the 1TB SSD ex. hd from Seagate didn't need to be reformatted and was cheaper from Best Buy.
Thanks to Stanley and Gina in Staples president's office were able to correct the fiasco involving the service contract at a local Staples store.

OK Value for 1TB Solid State Drive
Good form factor, faster that my WD HD, nice they include a USB A cord and adapter for use with older PC’s but you will still need to reformat it from exFAT to NTFS. You also need to download all required S/w from their site for utilities and encryption. Shop around, this older sku is often discounted.

Fast and reliiable
Works well with OS Big Sur on a Macbook Pro. Only drawback is the registration process. I had to submit photos and query repeatedly to register the device, even though I bought it from the online store. That's why it loses a star.

Solid and dependable
I just got this, and it's my third SSD from Western Digital. I fill up my previous drives and I buy another one. Always dependable and simply work. They are fantastic. I will buy another one when I fill this one up too!

Great
Great performance on an upgrade from a 500 GB drive. I may have a formatting error, but I have little remaining space on a 1 TB drive after transferring 490 GB from the previous My Passport drive.

Technological Wonder
In general, I prefer WD products. This 1TB SSD is an amazing technological achievement. Several years ago I couldn't imagine that I will live up to the time when I can buy and use this disk drive. I'm quite lucky.

Slow and Hard to use.
Extremely hard to set up and use. Slowest backup ever experienced. Bought this to replace an old WD passport with a standard hard drive. This unit is slower!

Response from Staples :
Hi Zilchhotrods,
We are sorry to hear that the WD My Passport SSD is not working as expected and thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. Please be informed that SSD drives are much faster and provide increased performance, reliability, and durability with the benefits of lower power consumption and less maintenance costs associated with disk drive failure.
Moreover please know that slow performance can be caused due to several factors like computer configuration, multiple applications running on the computer while trying to access or backup the data, fragmented disk which may also result in slow computer disk read capability, the total amount of data on a disk and the relative size of each file, encrypted backup or scanning of each file by anti-virus installed in the computer or USB port of the computer with which the drive is connected, etc.
Stopping applications and software that use CPU and memory, keeping all the files in a single directory instead of spreading them in multiple directories, connecting the drive directly to the USB 3.0 port of the computer and avoiding the USB hub while using the drive, etc. are the recommended steps to enhance the performance of the drive. As a troubleshooting step, please ensure that the Hard Drive is connected directly to the USB port of the computer and the files which you are attempting to copy are not in use by any other program of the computer.
Furthermore, you can also refer to the WD support page to check for the Theoretical USB Interface Speeds to find out the theoretical speed given by different USB port types.
