Flatbed scanners have a large rectangular glass plate where users place documents for scanning. An optical scanning head lies below the plate and moves along parallel guides to scan. These scanners have adjustable, white-lined lids that provide a uniform background allowing scanners to identify the size and shape of the document the user is scanning. Advantages of flatbed scanning include the ability to scan an entire sheet in one go without moving the document as well as to scan bulky items such as magazines and books. Find the right scanners and accessories for home and work applications at Staples.

Flatbed scanner size
The dimensions of the scanner’s glass plate determine the maximum scanned sheet size. Most devices accommodate standard letter-size paper that’s 8.5 x 11 inches. The next logical size up are scanners with bed dimensions of 11 x 17 inches. These scan two letter-size sheets at a time or one sheet of tabloid paper. Some scanners can scan larger sheets by performing sequential scans or by using a special sheet feeder. All scanners can identify paper size, allowing them to scan smaller documents.

Scanning speed of flatbed scanners
Scanner throughput is the time it takes for the scanner to scan a single sheet together with the time to feed the next sheet into the machine. This varies widely depending on the paper size, dots per inch (dpi) selected, and whether the scan setting is for color or black and white. Scanners for home and photographic use may take between 10 and 30 seconds, depending on the setting, while office scanners fitted with a document feeder can scan at more than 60 pages per minute (ppm).

Flatbed scanner resolution
The maximum scanner resolution, measured in dpi, determines the degree of image clarity and detail. Standard scanners for home and office usually achieve 600 dpi, which is more than adequate for text. Photographic scanners go higher, with resolutions between 2,400 and 4,800 dpi, while those for specialist use go further. Some photographic scanners have adapters for scanning slides and transparencies.

What are the best flatbed scanners for the office?
Office scanners should be fast and able to send scans to individual computers. To avoid delay, throughput should comfortably exceed average demand. Check the number of scans required is less than the stated monthly duty cycle of the machine. Consider a machine with a sheet feeder, preferably with the ability to turn pages over for automatic double-sided scanning.

How to choose a flatbed scanner for color photography
Features to consider include color depth, dpi, and scanner size. Color depth represents the ability of the scanner to capture different color shades and gray tones accurately. For high-quality work, look for a color depth of 48-bit and 16-bit grayscale. Higher dpi increases the level of detail captured, but as color printers usually work at 300 dpi, scanning at 600 dpi is usually adequate. An exception is scanning negatives, slides, or fine details that need enlarging. In this case, a higher dpi setting is better. Choose a scanner that’s big enough to scan your largest prints at one time.

Can flatbed scanners scan to text or PDF?
Yes, many can scan to machine-readable PDF formats if they incorporate TWAIN or similar technology. Some scanners incorporate optical character recognition technology (OCR) that converts images directly into text.
