I plugged MyPassport Ultra for Mac into my computer, but no icon appeared on my computer. The online user's manual was of no help. So far, it is useless.

Easy
Easy to setup and use, right out of the box on my MacBook Pro. Excellent performance. Nice to have the included connector, too, so it can work with an older Mac that has only a USB port available. Well worth the very reasonable price for 4TB.

Needed Reformatting After Only a Few Months
I needed to reach out to WD because my Mac would not see the hard drive. I needed to reach out to WD for troubleshooting and it needed to be reformatted. I use it only for Time Machine backups and it never leaves my desk. Since it is so soon in my owning of the HD, I am wondering about it's quality.

Response from Staples :
We have identified a firmware issue that presents itself in very limited situations and can cause SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, and WD My Passport SSD products to unexpectedly disconnect from a computer.
Full details, including a serial number lookup tool to find out if your product is impacted, can be found on the Firmware Updates for SanDisk & WD Portable SSDs page. https://support-en.wd.com/app/firmwareupdate

Handy little unit.
Pretty easy to get hooked up, although there are no instructions included and i had to go online to figure out what to do. Have not had to access the unit yet, so no idea how well it's performing.

Hi Jim Adams,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with WD My Passport Ultra for Mac External Hard Drive and appreciate your time for providing the review. It's possible that the drive might have a raw format or the available capacity is still unallocated. Please check if the drive has a compatible format or not. If not, then the drive needs to be formatted with a compatible file format to make it accessible. However, please note that formatting a drive is data destructive. Do not format a drive if you have any data present on it or you might lose it.
There can also be a few causes due to which the drive has stopped working. Such causes include the faulty USB port of the drive or the computer, faulty USB cable of the drive or the drive itself may not be getting enough power to spin up and register on the computer to show up. Unsafe ejection of the drive during any read or write operation can also result in the corruption of the drive's partition.
The best practice is to run diagnostics with WD Drive Utilities when a drive does not perform as expected or is behaving abnormally. We recommend avoiding USB hubs for external hard drives and therefore connect the drive directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer. Please refer to the WD support page to know more.

If the test is inconclusive and the drive is under warranty, you can replace the drive by creating RMA with Western Digital. To know the steps to create an RMA, you can refer to the WD support page.
