China Markers

SORT BY:
People use china markers, sometimes called grease pencils, for writing and drawing on just about any surface. These hard, waxy utensils are ideal for marking smooth, non-porous surfaces, such as glass or porcelain, and for making dark, bold marks on sketch paper. Grease markers have earned a following among artists and artisans alike for their versatility and the highly visible lines they leave on surfaces. They're also a favorite for temporary marks, such as window decorations or for labeling machine parts. Staples carries a wide selection of markers, including wet erase markers, chalk markers, and more.

Write or Draw With China Markers
Choose fine-tip markers for writing text and for making discreet marks on equipment and glass. Hold the point of the grease pencil perpendicular to the surface you're working on to sketch exquisitely thin lines for extremely close details. Use a broad-tipped china marker, or hold a finer tip at an angle against the surface, to write messages on windows that are visible from the street, or to mark up a car's windshield. Regardless of how thick your lines are, grease marker marks are easy to clean off with soap and water.

Choose China Markers In Wood or Paper
China markers are made from a waxy filler in a stiff outer casing of wood or paper. Each type is appropriate for certain uses. Wood markers can be sharpened just like any other wooden pencil. This lets users hone the tip down to a fine point that's ideal for decorating pottery or writing notes in hard-to-reach areas, such as inside an engine block.

Paper markers can be "sharpened" without a sharpener, which makes them popular for outdoor applications. These have a small string sticking up near the end. When the tip is worn down from use, gently tug on the string to peel away the paper and expose more of the marker.

Choose China Markers In Different Colors
Choose a color based on the job the marker is needed for. Black or blue is easy to see and read at a glance, which makes them useful for marking machinery or transparent glass displays. These colors are also popular choices for sketch artists who want to get a rough charcoal effect on paper.

Many artists and crafters like to use lighter colors for decorating windows, vases and glassware. Because marks from china markers are so easy to wipe away, users can experiment with colors and effects until they're happy with the results.

What Is a China Marker Used For?
Paint markers are usable anywhere you need to write or draw, both for information and decoration. Artists use them for sketches, while logistics teams use them to label parts for shipping. Because grease pencils can mark wet or dirty surfaces, they are also exceptionally useful for writing under adverse conditions, such as in the rain or on smooth surfaces where regular ink pens won't work.

Why Are They Called China Markers?
The name comes from one of these tools' early uses: making marks on the smooth surface of porcelain, or china vessels. These marks can be permanent as decorations, or temporary indicator marks used during the crafting process and then wiped away.

How Do China Markers Work?
These permanent markers lay down a smooth line of colored filler when dragged across a surface. The core is typically encased in either wood or paper to stiffen the material inside and reduce the chance of breakage. Add china markers to your next back to school supplies list.
