Monitor cables are an essential component for any home or workplace computer setup. They enable video transmission from the computer tower to the monitor and also work with a range of other devices. There are many different types as well as adapters that enable communication between older and newer pieces of equipment. Others facilitate connecting multiple monitors to a single video source. Check out Staples for a wide range of computer cables and other accessories.

Identifying the different types of monitor cables
DVI-I cables have a white coloring and a varying number of pins on male connectors. These indicate whether it's a dual-link or single-link cable, although all types are generally compatible with the female DVI ports on computer towers. Cables with blue connectors are DVI/VGA cables that work with both digital and analog connections.

For optimal visual quality, look for monitors and computers that accept HDMI and DisplayPort computer monitor cables. These have slim, metallic connectors that plug into ports without the need for the screw-in attachments that DVI and VGA cables have. Many adapters are available to bridge the gap between different cable and port types. They convert DVI to HDMI or DVI to VGA. Some of these are also splitters, connecting to a single port on the tower and then featuring two ports of their own for connecting a pair of monitors.

Elements of a quality cable
Even the smallest parts of a monitor cable are important in delivering optimal performance. Highly conductive metals such as copper or gold make up the pins and connectors, ensuring a steady and reliable data transmission. They may feature insulation and shielding to protect against signal interference from other nearby devices.

Do any other devices utilize monitor cables?
Many gaming consoles feature both HDMI and DisplayPort compatibility to ensure high-quality visuals as well as audio. Some laptops have DVI ports, allowing for connecting to a larger monitor. You can also connect a laptop to a docking station that has monitor ports of its own. Switch between multiple devices at a single workstation with the specialized monitor cables employed by a KVM switch.

How can you keep multiple cables organized?
You may have many cable types at a single workstation or be using a cable splitter or extension cables to reach a distant video source. Cable zip ties are useful in wrapping these up in tight bundles, keeping them off the floor and preventing snags or other mishaps. Many desks, as well as monitor stands, also feature cut-out openings for cable management, giving them a place to go that reduces tangles and clutter.

What should you do to troubleshoot a malfunctioning cable?
If you're not getting an image on your monitor, sometimes a simple disconnect and reconnect fixes the issue. This is especially the case with HDMI and DisplayPort cables. The issue may also be with the video source itself rather than the cable, so try different, known-good cables and check to make sure that video drivers are up to date. If using a connector with pins such as a DVI or VGA, make sure there are no bent or otherwise damaged pins.
