Overhead scanners are a unique, convenient way to add versatility to your scanning tasks. They're essentially a flip-up camera that takes images of intact book and magazine spreads, requiring only that you turn the page to create the scan. The scanners also take sharp-resolution images of an array of documents and even some 3-D objects. Staples offers these innovative overhead imaging devices as part of its large family of printers, flatbed and sheet-fed scanners, and accessories.

Image-capture features of the overhead book scanners
The overhead cameras are part of an arm and pedestal assembly that comes with a large black desktop pad that serves as a backdrop for books and documents. The rectangular camera swings upward from the arm, perpendicular to the document, for imaging, and then swings flat against the arm when not in use to protect the scanning lens.

The cameras have 8- or 12-megapixel capture resolution, both of which provide photo-quality imaging for documents that are A4, letter-size or A3, 11 x 17 inch size. One of the model lines of overhead book scanners also includes 1280 x 1024 pixel digital video capability, with four integrated LED lamps to illuminate source material while you point out important items in the document to create files for video tutorials or to present online lectures. You can even sync the camera with your computer webcam to create single-screen videos that contain the document you're explaining and a video facial overlay with sound. You can also export these files to several video formats for online sharing.

Book and magazine spreads are the key imaging functions
The overhead scanners specialize in imaging intact books and magazines that, given their binding, don't lie flat for head-on scanning. They also require manual leafing to scan from one page to the next. The scanners are equipped with optical character recognition (OCR) technologies that compensate for both challenges.

Algorithmic digital technology includes book-curve image flattening, evening out text size and graphics' orientation according to their dominant metrics. Digital sensors detect the presence of "page-turning fingers" and erase them along the page border. Other digitization includes front- and back-cover detection, so the scanner automatically merges your pages within those cover boundaries.

What other features do the overhead scanners offer?
The scanner models also include self-timing image scans as you turn pages, at intervals from 3 to 7 seconds, giving you a time gap for leafing through marked pages. Automatic de-skewing to keep pages aligned during the imaging process, edge filling to maintain the appearance of damaged pages in the end-scan, and cropping to cut extraneous background fill may also be features of overhead book scanners.

What other documents can the overhead scanners handle?
The different scanner models variously can scan business cards, contracts, passports, standard and oversize documents, barcodes, and IDs, as well as several 3-D items, if not conical or spherical. You can simply press a button to scan directly from the overhead camera, instead of using the software embedded in your computer.

Is it easy to connect the scanners?
Overhead book scanners connect to your computer via the USB port. You don't need a separate electrical outlet. That means you can pack the scanner in your computer bag and take it with you for on-the-go scanning with your laptop.
