This allows you and your family or friends to share a single computer without having to close each other's applications each time you need to access your own account.
Fax forwarding
A feature that enables a fax machine to automatically forward any document it receives to another fax.
Fax header
An informational line of text printed at the top of every page by a fax machine; it includes your full name, your station ID, and your fax number. It may also include your company name and telephone number.
Fax memory
Fax memory (measured in megabytes, MB) determines fax speed and the number of pages that can be stored for later faxing. At 2MB, faxes are sent at six seconds per page, and up to 100 pages can be stored for later faxing. At 8 MB, faxes are sent at roughly three seconds per page, and up to 270 pages can be stored for later faxing.
Fax polling
A feature that enables a fax machine to automatically distribute the documents you specify to other fax machines that connect to it.
Fax remote retrieval
A fax machine feature that enables you to retrieve faxes from your machine remotely.
Fax/phone switch
Detects whether an incoming call is a fax transmission or a phone call. Allows you to use one line and phone number for both systems. This is useful if you do not have, or if you do not want to install, separate phone lines and numbers for your telephone and fax machine.
File management
You can quickly find what you need by grouping files and folders and using enhanced thumbnail views and organization that makes sense to you. You can view files in alphabetical groups, by file type, size, or date modified.
Files and settings transfer wizard
Enables the convenient transfer of files, documents, and settings from one computer to another. The wizard walks you through migrating files, documents, or settings from an old computer to a new one.
Finish
Refers to the overall smoothness of the paper.
Fire safe
Designed to keep the inside temperature of a safe below 350 degrees (the temperature at which paper begins to burn) for between 30 minutes and four hours. Offers minimal protection against break–ins.
Fire-protection rating
Refers to how long a safe will keep the inside temperature below 350 degrees (the temperature at which paper begins to burn). For a media safe, it refers to how long a safe will keep the inside temperature below 125 degrees (the temperature at which media storage burns).
FireWire
A very fast connection standard for peripherals (such as CD or DVD drives) that supports data transfer rates of up to 400 megabytes per second (Mbps). Apple developed and named this technology, though PCs have developed analagous technology, such as IEEE, Lynx, or i.link.
Five-point base
A chair supported by five arms.
Flatbed scanner
Similar to a copier in construction, in that the image to be scanned is placed on a flat piece of glass. This design means that flatbed scanners can scan bound documents such as books, and not just images or text on loose pieces of paper.
Floppy disk adapter
Accepts a SmartMedia card (a type of removable digital camera memory) so that digital images can be transferred to it and read on a floppy drive.
Floppy drive
A device that is used with 3.5" diskettes to store data files. Each disk typically holds about 1.4 MB of data.
Fluorescent
Cool to the touch, fluorescent light is often used to provide indirect lighting. Fluorescent bulbs last approximately 10 times as long as regular bulbs.
Font cartridge
A cartridge (or in newer printers, an internal memory card) that is plugged into a laser printer to add one or more "built–in" resident fonts; these resident fonts print much faster than fonts that must be downloaded to your printer, and they don't use any printer memory.
Four-point base
A chair supported by four arms.
Frequency
Measures the refresh rate, or number of times per second a CRT monitor's screen is refreshed or redrawn. The frequency needs to be at least 70 Hz to prevent the screen from flickering and causing eyestrain.
Front port option
An option that provides front access to ports (places on a computer where such devices as a keyboard, digital camera, disk drive, or disk drive can be connected) that are usually only found in the back of the CPU. The front ports make it easy to connect peripherals and keep cable clutter to a minimum.
Full-duplex speakerphone
Traditional conference call features permit only one party to speak at a time. Duplex speakerphones allow for free–flowing conversation and improved conference calling.
Full-strip stapler
Holds a full strip of staples (210).
Fuser roller
One of the system of rollers inside a laser printer. The fuser roller heats the page after the toner is applied, so the toner partially melts and sticks to the page for a permanent bond.
