These machines seal important documents between thin layers of clear plastic. Laminating protects documents from wear, prevents fading, and adds rigidity and strength.
LAN
Local Area Network. A network typically confined to a single floor or office building that enables authorized users (usually employees) to access shared files, send emails, and share such devices as laser printers.
Landscape printing
Printing a document in such a way that the longer length of the page runs from side to side rather than top to bottom. Landscape mode is often used to print spreadsheets and larger photographs.
Large-format printer
An inkjet printer that's designed to handle paper sizes of 11x17 inches or larger. Some large format printers also use continuous rolls of paper. These printers are specially designed to produce photo–quality posters, blueprints, maps, and signs.
Lateral files
The most efficient means of conventional filing. Built for high–volume capacity, they are much wider than vertical drawers. Choose from two to five drawers, letter– or legal–sized. Two–drawer models are designed to fit neatly under most work surfaces.
Law
Has medium ruling (9/32" between each line) and a single vertical margin line located 3" from the left edge of the pages, allowing questions to be written in on one side and answers on the other.
LCD screen
Liquid Crystal Display. A type of screen display commonly used in newer computer monitors, and originally in digital watches. LCDs do not flicker, and therefore cause less eyestrain. LCDs utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution between them.
LCD screen (digital cameras)
Digital cameras have a Liquid Crystal Display screen that allows pictures to be viewed and compared in a thumbnail format. Since LCD screens can be hard to see on sunny days, viewfinders can be purchased separately for outdoor shooting.
LED
Light–emitting diode. These display panels light up when electricity passes through them. The characters LEDs depict are usually red.
LED fax machine
Prints high–quality text and images onto plain paper like a laser fax, but uses diodes instead of lasers.
Leg lengths
Maximum paper thickness a staple can fasten.
Legal-sized faxes
If you plan to receive faxes on legal–sized paper, you should look for a machine with two paper drawers (one for 8.5" x 11", and one for legal–sized paper). This will allow faxes to be printed on appropriately sized paper.
Line management systems
These systems help you use multiple devices (usually a telephone, answering machine, fax, and modem) over a single phone line with one or more extensions.
Local Area Network (LAN)
A group of computers in an office or building connected to each other by cable –– and, thereby, networked. These computers can access files on other computers in the network, or enable others to open and use its files. Printers, modems, and CD–ROM drives are peripherals typically shared on a network.
Lumbar support
Lets the chair back move up and down and/or forward and backward to offer lower–back support. This feature reduces fatigue and strain by minimizing the pressure on the base of the spine.
Lumens
The standard for measuring a multimedia projector's light output and brightness.
