Used to have a different cable lock that required a key. Wound up becoming too much of a hassle to constantly keep track of the key. Now with this Targus lock, I only need to remember a 4 digit code. Setting the code was quick and simple. The length of the lock was also a nice feature. No more having to place my laptop in odd corners of the table just to make sure I could wrap the lock to something stable.

        Whatever you do, do not buy this product! I bought it on Friday and by Monday it was broken. The code changes on its own. When I wrote to customer service for Targus for advice, they told me that the "pins easily move" thus changing my code. I asked how I could reset it, and they told me to check every single number/code combination. As I read through the product page on Targus, other folks said the same thing: do not buy, codes change on their own, etc. Do not buy this product. I would return it, but I discarded the packaging on the day of the purchase.

        This came in very handy on a job site where I set up computer and then would have to walk away from it to check on machines. I knew laptop would be there when I got back. For the light security that the lock provides, they could have made the cable a little thinner. Since I use this to travel with, taking to job site, I have to roll it up and carry in my bag. A little thinner, more flexible cable would be handy, but all in all it works great. Was easy to slide through the laptop and the combination was easy to work.

            I own two of these security lock and cable combinations...one for my computer and one for my digital projector. They allow me at events to leave them running and not worry they will wonder off. With the dial lock feature, I don't have to worry about loosing a key.

                The Targus DEFCON CL Notebook Computer Cable Lock loops through a stationary object and connects to the lock slot of the notebook.
                Targus DEFCON Combo Lock (CL) is 6.5 feet of cut-resistant, vinyl-coated, galvanized steel cable that loops around any secure object and easily attaches to your laptop's lock slot. The DEFCON CL features a user-settable combination lock with up to 10,000 possible settings.
                Lock attaches to your laptop using the rectangular Lock Slot (standard on all laptops); impeding theft and acting as a great deterrent.

              I have a version stamped with words on it, "Staples" and "Wordlock". The packaging has been lost, but can you give me the default (starting) word to unlock and reset the combination? It has not been used yet. There is a four letter window on one edge where the letters line up to open the lock, and a button on the end for reset of the password. It would be great if you had a copy of the instruction set we can print and keep in our files.

              • A:

                You actually change the combination yourself using only a flat head screwdriver. First you enter your current combination, next you will find the reset screw and turn it 90 degrees clockwise. The next step is to enter your new combination, followed by turning the screw back to it's original position. When you are setting the combination for the first time, turn all numbers to zero before you turn the screw.
