There are many flashy protractors to choose from these days. Kids are drawn to the ones that come in a variety of colors and have arms or guides that help them measure angles. However, when they actually get in class and have to place that humongous hole on the vertex, they put the flashy ones away and beg for this one. There is no arm to fiddle with or break off (while missing half the lesson). It is the easiest to read and simplest to use. I especially like the beveled center opening. Students can easily see that they are on the line! An extra bonus for teachers: it is transparent and can be used on the overhead. Don't let this little low tech wonder fool you. It is worth driving all over town to find!

The only reason I got this particular protractor is for it's size. It's a couple inches longer than most other (cheaper and more easily found) protractors. For around $3 it's nothing special. It does the job as well as this kind of product can. I personally used it for determining angles on maps, but it will work fine in any situation. The only reason I'd recommend against it is because of the price.
Comments about Staedtler® Mars® 180 Degree Protractor:
This protractor is not well crafted: it is clumsy and non-suitable for a 4th grader because of its size and open edges. The color pink looks fine for my daughter, but the essential use of this item is nearly impossible.
