Where women network

Q: Do you know anyone in the Philadelphia, PA area that does what you do and has a special interest in helping women small business owners and could help me? I would love to get some advice, help, etc... I'd like a local person.

A: While business coaches like myself frequently mentor women in business by phone, it is wise for business people to also work with people in their own communities, since so many regulations are local rather than national in nature. I suggest you contact the Small Business Administration office in Philadelphia and describe the particulars of your business situation to them. They may well be able to provide you with a mentor with relevant experience. Also, they should know of any women in business, or women business owners groups in your area.
Two other good sources of information are the Chamber of Commerce for your area, which may run workshops for small business owners, and the universities, which may house entrepreneurship centers, either within the School of Business or as independent entities. At either of these places, you can see which local professionals are giving the workshops/trainings that seem most relevant to your concerns and then get directly in touch with those individuals. Finally, if you have family members in your business, I highly recommend looking at the UMass Family Business Center Web site.
