Roller frames hold different lengths, widths, and naps of paint rollers ― also called roller covers ― to apply prime or finishing coats quickly and efficiently over broad areas. The frames come in different roller-head lengths, depending on the painting application, from 4 inches to a standard 9 inches, and sometimes longer. Roller frames let you apply coats evenly, without evidence of brush marks, and they’re able to handle not only latex and oil paint but also finishes such as stains, polyurethane, and adhesives. Check out the high-quality roller frames and combo kits at Staples when purchasing paint supplies.

The basics of the frame
A paint roller frame consists of a springed roller-head cage, which holds the hollow core of the paint roller with compression from the springs. The cage revolves around a fixed metal shank on roller bearings to let the cover move freely in a push or pull movement on a surface. The cage has two end caps to help maintain the shape of the roller cover against its contact pressure on the surface. The roller head has a middle shank that attaches to a metal roller-head handle, basically a supporting bracket that, in turn, attaches directly to a sturdy, normally polypropylene handgrip. The grips have finger and thumb supports or textured surfaces for secure grasp and maneuverability. The bottom end of the hand grip has a threaded socket for attaching extension poles, to make high-wall and ceiling painting more efficient.

Several standard 9-inch paint roller frames are available
All the standard frames for applying paint to wide surfaces like walls and ceilings come with sturdy cages providing secure spring compression for stabilizing the roller cover. While many consist of five-wire cages, some are available in fiberglass-reinforced nylon, making it easier to remove the wet roller at the end of a job. All shanks and roller-head handles come in galvanized or chrome-plated metal, making cleanup easier and protecting the assembly from solvents in paint or other finishes. Many of the 9-inch rollers have oversize, tapering textured grips for a more comfortable, secure feel throughout a long workday.

Why use a 4-inch roller frame?
While the traditional application for a roller is for broad surface painting, smaller or more narrow surfaces also benefit from quick, efficient applications. Use a smaller 4-inch roller frame when you have to paint the interior of cabinets that may be more awkward to paint with a paintbrush. The 4-inch paint roller frames are also useful for cutting-in edges around walls and ceilings. The 4-inch frames offer the same galvanized or chrome-plated shanks and roller handles as the standard-size frames, and they also include some with fiberglass-reinforced nylon cages for easy roller removal and cleanup.

Are specialty frames available?
Innovative twin-cage frames are available for painting pipes, railings, and posts in much less time than using a brush. The cages are adjustable for dimension, starting at 1-inch in diameter, and you can paint two sides of the extension simultaneously.

Do the frames come in bulk packages?
Some frames, including those with fiberglass-reinforced cages, come in multi-packs to give paint contractors a cost-saving option for their work crews. In addition, some frames are available in convenient kits that include roller covers and an accessory paintbrush.
