What Are Catalog Envelopes?

Catalog envelopes, also referred to as open-end envelopes, are a type of envelope designed to open and seal on one end and are large enough to hold most documents without having to bend them, as opposed to more traditional letter-size envelopes. These envelopes have a center seam which makes them more durable for mailing heavy-weight materials, hence the name. Catalog envelopes vary in size, weight, color and even texture and are often used in business for lengthy reports and multipage documents. They’re also great for organizing important paperwork, secure mailing or even transporting photos, money or promotional materials

What’s the Difference Between Catalog Envelopes and Booklet Envelopes?

Though both are popular types of business envelopes, there is a difference. Catalog envelopes open on the shorter end. Booklet envelopes are designed with the opening on the long end. For example, on a 10" x 13" envelope, the open flap is along the 10" side if it’s catalog and on the 13” side if it’s a booklet envelope.

What Sizes Do Catalog Envelopes Come In?

Catalog envelopes come in several sizes to suit your needs. Common sizes include:

  • 6” x 9” - This size is perfect for photos, cash, checks, coins and other smaller objects.
  • 9” x 12” - This is a commonly used size for brochures, contracts and other standard-sized documents.
  • 10” x 13” - Use these for multipage documents, large photographs, thick brochures and heavy pamphlets.

What’s the Best Seal Types for Catalog Envelopes?

As with most other envelope types, you can purchase a catalog envelope with just about any seal variation. Common seal types include:

  • Clasp - A clasp is best when you want to reuse your envelope.
  • Gummed - Better suited for single-use mailing, a gummed seal must be moistened.
  • Clasp & Gummed - Combining these seals adds extra protection for sensitive documents.
  • Peel & Stick - These are also called self seal business envelopes. They feature a strip you peel away to reveal an adhesive. Simply press the adhesive to the envelope for quick sealing without the need to add moisture.
