What Is a Magic Marker?
Magic markers are similar to a felt pen. Though the tip is larger, it’s still made of felt, which consists of porous fibers. Magic markers are designed with a reservoir of colored ink. This ink is made with a solvent that keeps it in a liquid form. Whereas solvent ingredients like the formerly used toluene and xylene are considered harmful, magic markers today use safe solvents like alcohols to keep the ink in good working condition. Each marker also comes with a cap that should remain on when the marker is not in use. Otherwise, the ink will dry out.
Magic markers come in a variety of colors, including red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple and pink, as well as neutrals like black, brown and gray.
Why Do They Call It a Magic Marker?
The term “magic marker” isn’t specific to a brand. It was coined in 1952 by Sidney Rosenthal. The original device relied on a glass bottle to contain the ink and a wool felt wick and writing tip to do the marking. Rosenthal eventually called the device a “magic marker” because it could transfer ink to virtually any surface.
Is a Magic Marker Permanent?
While the permanent magic marker is the most common, there are erasable versions. Unless a marker is labeled as non-permanent (“dry erase” or “whiteboard” markers), however, you can assume it’s permanent. Permanent ink does last a significant amount of time, but permanence depends on the surface you write on. Generally, magic marker ink cannot be rubbed off with soap and water, though on some surfaces it can be removed with acetone. Non-permanent ink dries quickly and can then be easily wiped away when used on recommended slick surfaces, such as a whiteboard.
What Can You Do With Magic Markers?
Magic markers are very versatile. Use them for art projects to add color and even glitter when you want your art to pop. They’re also ideal to use when making posters thanks to the vibrancy of the ink. Teachers love using magic markers to write or draw on a dry erase white board, as well as on projectors using a laminated cover sheet.
