If your office is like most, you understand the importance of maintaining records that pertain to particular projects and/or clients. Focused use of file folders and hanging files is one time-tested way to effectively make that happen. If you can find files produced from recycled fiber, so much the better. To be considered a recycled file folder, products must be manufactured with at least a portion of pre- or post-consumer fiber. Recycled folders are available in paper, plastic, and pressboard.

Organize the Office
In 1898 Edwin Seibels invented the filing cabinet, and office organization has never been the same. Instead of stuffing documents into pigeonholes, office workers utilized manila file folders stored within a dedicated filing space. The basic concept of Seibels' cabinet remains intact today, albeit with many different filing systems. Peruse the products manufactured by industry leaders like Pendaflex, Smead, and Tru Red to find the recycled file folders and hanging files that best meet your office's organizational needs.

Create a Filing System
In the hanging file system, file folders are placed inside larger hanging files within cabinets, drawers, or boxes. Alternatively, recycled file folders can be placed directly onto shelves or inside file boxes. Once you've chosen your storage method, deciding on a folder size is the next step. Letter and legal-sized file folders are the two general options. Both are available in standard 3/4" sizes or expandables that can handle larger files.

Orient the Files
Once you've chosen the size of your recycled file folders and hanging files, the next step is determining the tab position so that your files will be easy to find when you need them. Many hanging file folders are sold in assorted packs featuring file folders with tabs in different positions that will stand out in a cabinet or drawer.
