What are Business Envelopes?

If you need to send a document, you’ll need an envelope to keep it safe and clean. Business envelopes serve a wide range of mailing needs in both personal and commercial environments. Businesses use these envelopes to mail letters and documents, as well as to distribute confidential information internally.

In addition to the Staples brand, we carry a wide selection of business envelopes from popular names such as JAM Paper, Quality Park, and LUX.

Types of Business Envelopes and Uses

Business envelopes come in a variety of sizes and materials that accommodate different uses. Below are a few of our most popular envelopes and what each is used for:

  • #10 envelopes - The most common size, this envelope measures 4.125 x 9.5 inches and fits most business correspondence such as invoices and letters.
  • Interoffice envelopes - These envelopes come with a button and string design, measuring 9 x 12 inches to fit standard letter-size paper. They're ideal for transferring documents between departments and often have a series of lines for writing names or dates for tracking purposes.
  • Tyvek envelopes - This is a more durable option that comes in multiple colors and sizes and features tear, scratch and water-resistant design.

Custom Envelopes In All Shapes, Sizes, and Colors

It’s essential that your business envelopes protect and secure all documents enclosed and clearly communicate your brand because, when mailing materials to your customers, their first impression of your company is the envelope they receive in the mail. This is why it’s important to consider your envelope’s color, size, durability, and primary function carefully.

For example, specialty industries, such as insurance and accounting, need envelopes that clearly identify the materials within for quick attention. They feature a bold message on the front that briefly describes the enclosed documents along with special sorting instructions such as "do not bend" to avoid damage to the content.

Additional Features of Business Envelopes

  • Window Envelopes save time because they don’t require you to create printed labels. They often include one or two windows to display names and addresses that appear on internal documents. You can choose from left- or right-aligned windows and they have a sturdy clear film to prevent debris from getting inside. Window envelopes work well for mailing out invoices that have pre-printed addresses and distributing payroll checks.
  • Full Front Envelopes can run through the printer to pre-print, attach labels or hand write details.
  • Gummed Flaps require moisture to seal, or you can opt to seal them shut with a strip of tape. Some have an easy-close flap with a self-adhesive strip for quick and efficient sealing to eliminate tampering.
  • Tamper-Proof Design comes with a tear strip for quick opening without disrupting the contents inside.
  • Heavy-Duty Construction Envelopes can withstand the rigors of shipping.
